Yellow Alert Issued for Delhi-NCR as Heavy Rain Predicted — Monsoon Onset Nears

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, Gurgaon, and Faridabad, warning residents to brace for moderate to heavy rainfall on Monday. With dark clouds looming and humidity levels rising, anticipation for the official onset of the monsoon in North India is also building.

Weather Forecast for June 23

According to the latest forecast, Delhi-NCR is expected to receive 20-50 mm of rainfall today, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 40 km/h. The yellow alert signals potential localised waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and flight delays in the region.

Monsoon Progress: When Will It Hit Delhi-NCR?

The southwest monsoon, which arrived early in Kerala this year, has been advancing steadily. It has already covered significant parts of eastern and central India. According to IMD estimates, Delhi and adjoining NCR regions may witness monsoon arrival between June 27 and June 30.

The current pre-monsoon showers are part of the monsoon's northern push, indicating that the official onset is just days away.

Impact on Daily Life

With the yellow alert in place, commuters are advised to:

Avoid low-lying routes prone to waterlogging

Check real-time traffic and flight schedules

Carry umbrellas and waterproof gear

Stay indoors during thunderstorms, if possible

Authorities have also been asked to be on standby to manage drainage and emergency situations in flood-prone areas.

Why a Yellow Alert?

The IMD classifies a yellow alert as a warning to “be aware” of weather developments that could impact daily life. It’s issued in anticipation of:

Heavy rainfall (7–11 cm)

Thunderstorms or lightning

Disruption in outdoor activities
